The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Friday amid continued sloganeering and protests by Opposition members demanding a discussion on key national issues, including the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar.
The lower house will reconvene on Monday, July 28, at 11 AM. The Rajya Sabha was also adjourned earlier in the day and is scheduled to meet the same day.
BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, who was in the chair, urged Opposition members to maintain order and allow the introduction and discussion of private members’ bills. He emphasized the significance of Friday, traditionally reserved for private legislative initiatives, and noted that over 200 members were scheduled to introduce their proposals.
“Today is your day. Friday is meant for private members’ bills. The whole country is watching. Do you want to create disruption or raise people’s issues?” Pal asked Opposition MPs during the disruption.
Before the final adjournment, the House briefly took up “The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024” for consideration.
Speaker Om Birla also convened an all-party meeting earlier in the day after the initial 11 AM adjournment. He appealed to all parties to ensure smooth functioning of Parliament and maintain decorum. The meeting also included discussions on an upcoming special 16-hour session scheduled for July 28 on Operation Sindoor.
Despite the Speaker’s efforts and repeated appeals for dialogue and cooperation, the Opposition continued protests over issues including the SIR exercise, leading to an impasse that has disrupted parliamentary proceedings since the start of the Monsoon Session on July 21.
Birla reiterated the importance of constructive debate and reminded members that Parliament is meant for addressing people’s concerns, not for disorder.
